Colour grading a feature film involves thousands of decisions. Most of them are mechanical: matching the colour of a cut to the previous shot, stabilising the colour of a handheld shot over time, correcting for different colour responses between cameras.
These mechanical decisions take time and attention. They leave less of both for the creative decisions that a skilled colourist exists to make.
What we built
Our colour pipeline assistant runs a pre-grade pass on every sequence before the colourist touches it. It performs automated primary shot matching within each scene, flags temporal instability for review, and identifies camera cross-contamination. The colourist receives a session where the mechanical baseline is already handled. Nothing is applied without colourist review.
Results in production
On two long-form productions, colourists reported spending roughly 35% less time on primary correction work and more time on creative decisions. Both asked to keep using the tool on their next projects.
